Sharjah Press Club, an initiative of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, hosted the first session of 9th Sharjah Ramadan Majlis Wednesday night on the Instagram, the popular social media platform, under the slogan, Majliskum Endukum (Your Council is with you).
The first session of the popular Sharjah Ramadan Majlis this year dealt with the critical importance of “healthy lifestyles and disease prevention.” The session featured Brigadier Dr Ali Singel, Health Adviser to the Dubai Police, and Dr Hossam Al Tatari, Consultant, Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Heart Medical Centre in Al Ain. The session was moderated by Ahmed Sultan, anchor and television host from Sharjah Broadcasting Authority.
Vital Lessons from Coronavirus
Dr Ali Singel underscored the importance of mental health and its impact on public health, explaining how negative thoughts could have far-reaching repercussions for human immunity. He called for enhancing disease prevention through sound health practices, both at the psychological and physical levels. The expert stressed that everyone is responsible for not just his own health but the overall health and wellbeing of his family.
Referring to the raging global pandemic of novel Coronavirus, Dr Singel called for learning the vital lessons from the crisis and embracing basic hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing and safety measures against disease transmission through social distancing and maintaining family institutions.
He lauded the vital role of the media in disseminating authentic medical information and promoting general health awareness among all members of society and encouraging the sound hygiene practices in these extraordinary times.
Dietary behaviour and immune system
On this occasion, Dr Hossam Al Tatari of the Heart Medical Centre in Al Ain shed light on how the human immune system works and the various stages it goes through with age. He also tackled the various methods of disease prevention and the various causes of vulnerability and weak immunity in some individuals.
Stressing the importance of nutritional behaviour in building a strong immune system, especially in children, he highlighted the vital nutrients and vitamins that a person can obtain from a balanced diet. He also underlined the importance of necessary vaccinations in fighting various diseases.
DrTatari also stressed the importance of healthy daily habits such as good sleep, a balanced diet and the need to avoid stress and psychological pressure as much as possible for a strong immunity and the strength to fight diseases.
During the first session of the Ramadan Majlis, held for the first time online from 10pm to 11pm after taraveeh prayers, both experts also answered a number of questions of the audience.
On this occasion, the winners of the first week of Ramadan contest, in which more than 1500 people participated, announced. Six winners won themselves a handsome cash prize of AED 3000.
The Sharjah Press Club will host the second session of the Ramadan Majlis on Tuesday, May 5, at 10pm debating the role of the media in times of crisis. Veteran Omani media figure Khaled Al Zadjali and Egyptian journalist and television host Lamis Elhadidy will take part in the discussion.
